Throughout the month of July Coolamon Shire will celebrate its inaugural WinterFest.

One of the highlights of the month will be “CoolGrass”. On July 19 and 20, three outstanding Australian Bluegrass bands will perform blistering instrumentals and award winning vocals.

Hard Drive Bluegrass Band, Karen Lynne Bluegrass Circle and The Shiny Tops Strings are well known, widely respected and highly polished acts.

The Bands and bands’ members have received accolades in Bluegrass and traditional Country music in both Australia and United States of America and share between them an extensive list of awards. Audiences at “Coolgrass” will be exposed to a collection of Australia’s best in the Bluegrass genre.

The venue is The Old Methodist Church, Loughnan Street Coolamon. The concerts will start at different times on each night with 8.00 – 10.30pm Friday, and 7.00 – 10.00pm Saturday.

The variation in starting times is due to the Opening of The Up-To-Date Art Exhibition on the Friday evening. The Saturday concert will include an added feature with the inclusion of Cajun music.

Both concerts include BYO. The audience will be provided with an assortment of Middle Eastern canapés during intermission.

Tickets are available only through bookings.  No door sales. Ticket outlets include Allisons Music, Baylis Street , Wagga Wagga and Coolamon Country Bakehouse, Cowabbie Street, Coolamon. Online sales TBC.

In addition to the concerts, workshops will be offered by the musicians in mandolin, fiddle, banjo; claw hammer, old time, bluegrass, guitar; resonator. Also shape note singing workshops are offered to interested persons. Workshops will run for one hour with two sessions on Saturday (from 1pm and 3pm) afternoon and shape note singing on Sunday morning from 11am.

Artist Biographies

The Shiny Top Strings

The Shiny Top Strings are Maurie Llambias, Richard Galluzzi and Jimmy Rush, three bald ( 'shiny topped') fellers with a love of old timey traditional tunes and songs.

Maurie ( fiddle),  can often be seen in late night sessions, fiddle in hand, fighting off sleep for "one last tune".

Richard ( clawhammer banjo, vocals) plays, teaches, and breathes banjo, studies archaic recordings and works at establishing the unique and authentic "Western Sydney" clawhammer style...

Jimmy Rush ( guitar, vocals) is a well known and widely respected bluegrass flatpick guitarist and vocalist with a long list of credits and performances. Sometimes he picks a banjo , too.

Together, the Shiny Top Strings have performed at a number of festivals and clubs, delivering their own take on the old songs and tunes that they love; making sure others get the chance to hear and share them.
